RAISING THE BAR

Bohemian Rhapsody: It Will ROCK YOU!

by: Dorothea West

Queen was a group who made music generations ahead of their time. The biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody highlights many elements of the band’s story, focusing mainly on the lead singer Freddie Mercury. Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara to a Parsis family, who migrated from Zanzibar to England in 1964, because of safety concerns. Mercury wrote his own songs and dreamed of being a musician. Mercury enrolled at Isleworth Polytechnic (now West Thames College), where he met Brian May and Roger Taylor, members of the band Smile. When Smile’s lead singer and bass player quit, Mercury took over as singer and John Deacon took over as bass player. The band quickly became Queen and started to experiment with pushing the norms of Radio music. As someone who loves Queen’s music, and finds their origin story to be quite interesting, as each member faced their own challenges and brought their own unique personality to the band, I found the movie very enjoyable. Queen’s hit music is heavily featured throughout the movie and the filmmaking was very well done and kept the viewer interested at all times. Though other reviewers have commented on how certain elements of Queen’s story seemed to be glossed over, however I found the way the story was presented helped to keep the focus of the movie on the music, instead of the band’s personal life. The fact that the movie also had a PG-13 rating, meant that it had to refrain from going in depth about more adult subjects. This rating also allowed younger people to enjoy the movie, thus expanding Queen’s demographic. Queen is a band that will be remembered for generations, and this movie is just one way of keeping their music alive. So, if you enjoy amazing music, and want to see a story that will appeal to all of your emotions, go see Bohemian Rhapsody!
