STUCO 2022-23 COUNCIL INTERVIEW

IMG_1884.JPG

CO-PRESIDENT
Katherine Ni

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

Hello. My name is Katherine, and I am the STUCO co-president alongside Ashanti! I went to middle school at Manhattan Academy of Technology, which is around the same size as MHSHS. I am also a student in a program called Legal Outreach College Bound and a member of their Civic Engagement and Social Justice Council. I used to play soccer and run track, but now I play badminton and volleyball. Throughout the school year, you'll see and hear from me through WSA (pen name Astral), MHSHS Discord (Owner), Key Club (Vice President), Mural Club (Leader), or Newspaper Club (Editor). I can be a bit moody at times, but if you have any concerns with the school or people, please reach out to me in person, by email, or on social media platforms!

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

Last year, I was the STUCO's secretary. It all started after Dr. Froner suggested that I join STUCO after talking to him the day after returning to in-person learning. The nail hit the coffin when my friends, Fatima E and Emerson C, convinced me to run for secretary. Lucky for me, I was the only person who ran for secretary last year. Of course, none of this would’ve happened without the support from our school's amazing teachers, staff, and students. I would like to thank these people and make this year more enjoyable for all of us!

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

Most of my goals would be dull to the Gatherer's readers; however, I know I want to do one thing for sure. Hopefully, this year's STUCO can complete event preparations weeks before the actual event. I hope to bring back events that MHSHS had prior to COVID-19.

CO-PRESIDENT
Ashanti Ramirez

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

Hello! My name is Ashanti Ramirez. If you ask my friends, I'm encouraging but always honest, and if you ask my teachers, I'm diligent and accountable. I'd like to think of myself as trustworthy, open, and thoughtful. I resolve to approach everything with an open and honest mind and to treat others with kindness and understanding.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

I have always been outspoken, helpful, and goal-oriented. And the student council helped me fulfill all of those parts of me by helping the quiet voice be heard and be a voice of change for my community. And as a former member of the council and a 9th and 10th-grade representative, I hope that with my experience I can guide all members onto the right path. to leave my final year on campus with only fond memories of their high school years.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

I hope to make the environment feel as welcoming and unifying as possible. Before the infamous Hunter Games, as a school, we should have a healthy balance between academics and leisure, and I plan to do this through school-wide events.

Alyse Smith

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

My name is Alyse Smith. I’m a courageous, brave, outgoing, authentic, black young woman. A little about myself: I'm a hardworking, religious person who is always kind to others.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

I feel like I’m very fit to be a leader simply because I look out for others on a daily basis, so this would be a role that I’d fit into perfectly since it would be my obligation now, I guess, to look out for others.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

If anything, my goals are to make this year at Hunter enjoyable and simple for all of the students, primarily by keeping my word.

JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE
Nabila  Nuha

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

I am a junior at MHSHS this year and feel that this school has been supportive of my growth as an individual and has shaped me in more ways than one. When I sent in my choice of school back in middle school, I was conflicted between the two schools. I eventually chose MHSHS, even though I knew it would be challenging. This school has changed me as a person, and I would like to say that I am proud of myself and the accomplishments I have made. Being able to make mistakes and learn from them is one of the qualities I have learned to appreciate over the years. I feel as though I have a great work ethic and will continue to thrive, pushing myself to my limits. I like to think that I am an easy person to talk to and that I love to diversify my surroundings.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

In my time here at MHSHS, I was able to make such great relationships with kids my age and younger, as well as with the supportive staff we have. If I am being honest, what compelled me to run was when I was asked by people if I could run for student council. The thought of running didn't cross my mind, but their asking really helped motivate me to run. When I actually took the time, I realized just how much this position is something I would truly enjoy doing. I looked at what being a representative meant and found myself meeting those standards of having the qualities of a leader and having the communication skills needed. After much consideration, I finally decided on running.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

This year, my main goal is to accommodate my grade and really do my part as their representative. I hope that I can be a part of making this stressful year better for them. By creating a space in which people can feel comfortable addressing their ideas and concerns, I strive to provide a positive change in their last year here in the MHSHS building and give them a year worth remembering.

I'm Khamani Brown, and I really like helping people. Very social. I'm not too crazy over anything, and I have four dogs currently.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

Well, last school year it was me honestly wanting a taste of how it would be since it was my first time ever being on any type of student council, but this year it was more of a "keep pushing" type thing to see what I could possibly pick up on and do better with this time around

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

I'm honestly trying to do better than before.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

Since my school community is a big part of my daily life, I always want to be involved in my community. In addition to this, I was also on the student council last year, and it created the best memories of my freshman year. This year, I want to make more memories, and that is why I joined the student council.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

As a student council member serving as one of the sophomore representatives, I would like to make sure that all the opinions of the sophomore class are heard and taken into consideration. I want to make this year a really hands-on year, allowing the class of 2025 to become closer. Xoxo

Yongna Guan

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

Hey, my name is Yongna (yo-na) Guan. There are honestly not that many interesting things about me. I'm just like one of you. I like to read, listen to music, and try new things. Sometimes, I play volleyball >:)

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

Upon entering this school around two months ago, I immediately knew I wanted to be more involved and make an impact in the school community through student council, clubs, and sports. It stressed the importance of teamwork, and I wanted to learn how to work with others to make an impact, express my perspective, and contribute to the school community overall. It allows me to use my current social and leadership skills and even gives me the opportunity to build on them.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

Some goals I hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council are to be a good, if not great, immaculate sophomore representative. I want to accurately represent all of the students and make their voices heard. I hope to be able to make this year enjoyable and filled with fun, sparked throughout this school year with meaningful school events.

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

Hi! My name is Rihanna; I'm 13, and I'd like to believe I'm very optimistic, but sometimes I worry too much and I'm a bit forgetful (just a little bit). My strongest trait is being able to adjudicate and understand how everyone's feeling. Currently, I'm learning many new hobbies, like poetry, volleyball, dancing, crocheting, and anything else that comes across my mind.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

I have many things that motivated me to join our student council, but to keep it short, let's just say I really want to give freshmen a voice.

Emilio Guerrero

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

I am simply just another normal teenager. I am fourteen years old, and I am a very charismatic person. I am also honest with my feelings and more. Friends are the most compelling thing to me because they are people who care about you and are always there for you. Fun fact: many people remember my birthday as bad luck because it was the last day of school when COVID hit.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

What motivated me to join the MHSHS Student Council was the urge to try something new. I wanted to explore the feeling of having to go through an election and represent my people.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

Some goals I would like to accomplish as a member of the Student Council are to bring up problems from freshmen and address them, as well as to grow as a leader.

WEBMASTER
Jenny Pan

So tell me, who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself! What do you find most compelling? What are some facts about you?

Hey ^__^! My name is Jenny, and I'm currently a junior here at MHSHS. I have a wide variety of interests. I enjoy learning about psychology, true crime, music, sports, baking, and much more. I am also a big cat person and love to share my music recommendations.

What motivated you to join the MHSHS Student Council?

Being in my third year of high school and having one year over zoom, I have grown to notice the lack of both promotion and participation in school events. Thus, I ran for the position to hopefully change this. Additionally, I leave for the college campus next year, and I want to make an impact before I go. My hobby in graphic design also inspired me to take on this role.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a member of the Student Council?

With my new role as the council's webmaster, I hope to promote not only events but the overall high school experience to the fullest. The main way the school community bonds is through events, and by encouraging those to take part in them, I want to potentially make some core memories for many.
