Have Fun and Stay Active: Winter & Spring Sports By Shirley Weng

As we slowly adjust to winter, we also begin the season for winter sports. Here at MLK, students can participate in Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball, Varsity wrestling, and indoor track as winter sports. The main goal of these teams is for students to stay competitive while also having fun playing the sports they enjoy. The winter sports season usually lasts from November (sometimes even late October) through March. However, the season may extend longer if the team makes it to the playoffs. To qualify, a team must earn a total of five wins. So far the boy’s wrestling team has won four matches, making them the closest team to securing a playoff spot.

You may be wondering, how to attend a home game. Students must show a current school ID and arrive no later than 15 minutes after the match has begun. If these requirements aren’t met, students will be escorted out the building. To keep track of upcoming games, visit the PSAL website, and search for Martin L. King Jr to view the sports calendar.

If you missed the winter season, don't worry there is always spring. The spring season runs from early March to June, depending on whether a team advances to the championship. Spring sports include Outdoor track, JV Soccer (girls), Varsity softball (girls), Varsity wrestling (girls), Varsity volleyball (boys), Varsity flag football (girls), Varsity baseball (boys), and Varsity badminton (girls). To try out for a sport, students must complete a physical/medical & parent consent form and submit it to the coach or the manager on the day of try-outs. Try-outs and interest meetings are usually posted on flyers , displayed on the black boards in the 560s hallways.

Participating in a school sport allows students to make new friends, stay healthy and active, and represent the school. If you understand the concept of a sport and you know the rules, consider trying out for the team. Whether or not you make the team, what matters most is having fun and making the effort to step up.
